Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

When should I call 9-1-1 instead of the non-emergency number?

Call 9-1-1 any time there is a threat to life or property, a crime in progress, a fire, a medical emergency, a crash with injuries, or a suspect still on scene. When in doubt, call 9-1-1.

Use the non-emergency number, (806) 395-5198, for reports of past crimes, noise complaints, animal problems, abandoned vehicles, house watch requests, and general questions.

What if I call 9-1-1 by accident?

Stay on the line and tell the dispatcher it was an accident. If you hang up, the dispatcher must call back or send an officer to make sure you are safe, which takes resources away from real emergencies.

Can I text 9-1-1?

Text-to-911 availability depends on your carrier and the regional 9-1-1 system. If you are unable to speak safely, try sending a text to 911. Calling is always the fastest way to get help. If text is not available you will receive a bounce-back message.

Does the department have a lobby open to the public?

The police department lobby at 116 First St is generally open during business hours. Officers are on patrol and may not always be at the station. If no one is available, call (806) 395-5198 and an officer will meet you.

Traffic & Citations

I received a citation. What are my options?

Citations issued by McLean officers for Class C misdemeanors are handled by the McLean Municipal Court. The date you must appear by is printed on your citation. Options generally include paying the fine, requesting a driving safety course or deferred disposition, or entering a plea of not guilty and requesting a trial. See Municipal Court for more.

Officers cannot accept payment or give legal advice about your citation.

My car was towed. How do I get it back?

Call (806) 395-5198 to find out which wrecker service has your vehicle. You will need proof of ownership, a valid driver's license, and proof of insurance to release the vehicle. Storage fees are set by the towing company and the state.

Can I report an abandoned vehicle?

Yes. Vehicles left on a public street for more than 48 hours, or vehicles that are inoperable, wrecked, or unregistered on private property, may violate city ordinances. Call (806) 395-5198 with the location, color, make, and license plate number.

Are golf carts and UTVs allowed on city streets?

Texas law allows golf carts and off-highway vehicles to operate on certain streets under specific conditions, including license plates, required equipment, daytime operation, and speed limits. Contact the department before operating these vehicles on city streets to confirm what is allowed in McLean.

Neighborhood Issues

My neighbor's music or dog is too loud. What can I do?

Often the best first step is a friendly conversation. If that does not work, or you do not feel comfortable approaching your neighbor, call (806) 395-5198. An officer will respond and attempt to resolve the issue.

Can I shoot fireworks in town?

Fireworks are restricted within city limits and may be prohibited entirely during drought conditions or when the county has a burn ban in place. Check with City Hall before the July 4th and New Year's holidays.

Can I burn trash or brush?

Burning household trash is not permitted within the city. Brush burning may be restricted, and is always prohibited during a county burn ban. Never burn on windy days. Call 9-1-1 for any fire that is out of control.

Someone is going door to door selling things. Is that allowed?

Solicitors may be required to register with the city. If someone is selling door to door and you are concerned, ask to see their identification and permit, do not let them inside, and call (806) 395-5198 with a description of the person and any vehicle.
