Outdoor Burning Reminder During Dry, Windy Conditions

Posted March 10, 2026 · Public Safety

Late winter and spring in the Texas Panhandle often bring strong winds, low humidity, and dry grass, a combination that can turn a small brush fire into a dangerous wildfire within minutes.

Before conducting any outdoor burning, residents should check whether the Gray County Commissioners Court has a burn ban in effect. Burning household trash, tires, construction debris, or other prohibited materials is not allowed within city limits at any time.

If you see smoke or fire that is not under control, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not attempt to fight a grass fire on your own in windy conditions.

Homeowners can help protect their property by mowing tall grass, clearing dead brush and debris away from structures, keeping gutters clean, and making sure address numbers are clearly visible from the street so first responders can find you.
