Scam Alert: Callers Impersonating Law Enforcement

Posted September 15, 2025 · Public Safety

The McLean Police Department has received reports of phone calls from individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers. The callers tell residents they have missed jury duty or have an outstanding warrant and must pay immediately using gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

These calls are scams. No legitimate law enforcement agency will ever call you to demand payment over the phone, and no agency accepts gift cards as payment for anything.

If you receive a call like this, hang up. Do not give out personal information, bank account numbers, or Social Security numbers. If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and call the department directly at (806) 395-5198.

If you have already lost money to a scam, please contact the police department to file a report. You should also contact your bank immediately and consider filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
