Winter Weather Preparedness for Panhandle Residents

Posted December 2, 2025 · Public Safety

Winter weather on the High Plains can change in a matter of hours. Strong cold fronts can drop temperatures by thirty degrees or more, and blowing snow can close Interstate 40 with little warning.

Protect your pipes by insulating exposed plumbing, disconnecting garden hoses, and letting faucets drip during hard freezes. Know where your water shut-off valve is located in case a pipe bursts.

Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle with blankets, water, snacks, a flashlight, a phone charger, jumper cables, and a bag of sand or kitty litter for traction. Check DriveTexas.org before traveling.

Check on elderly neighbors and those who live alone during extended cold snaps. If you see someone in danger from the cold, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency welfare checks, call the police department at (806) 395-5198.
